Catholic Crochet

Ash Wednesday marks the start of lent.  With a cross marked on our foreheads along with the words "Repent and turn to the Gospel" I started to think about how I could mould myself into a better human being, instead of focusing on my failings and my imperfections.  I thought I should focus on all that is good about me, after all God is full of compassion, forgiveness and love.  With these three words in my mind I remembered a present I had made for my mum on Mothers day in 2016, a Prayer shawl.  For me this gift represented giving back all the love my Mum had given me since I was born. She has wrapped herself up with the shawl many times, when she has felt cold, when saying her prayers or just simply when she needed a hug and I wasn't nearby. It is always there on the back of her favourite chair, ready when needed. With lent starting on February 14th, also known as Valentines Day, it got me thinking about the theme of hearts.  How could I use this in relation to my faith? I began my search for a pattern with a cross at the centre of a heart, my search was unsuccessful. I began to think about the heart of Jesus and how we give our hearts gladly to him and how much we endure in carrying our own crosses because of our love for him. With this in mind, I came up with (after several attempts!) my design for "My Cross in a Heart" which I could use as an applique and turn it into a bookmark to gift to people during lent, whilst walking with Jesus through the season of Lent. Love is the only gift that helps us through our life's trails and tribulations. I hope you enjoy this pattern and if you choose to use for yourself or gift to another I hope it brings you much Love.  As the advent season finishes with the Baptism of the Lord. It gives us time to reflect on how we can become better human beings. New Year, New Me , move forward with all the good things about yourself and leave the not so good behind.  Reflect on being born again with no flaws or imperfections, strive to be the best you can. Remember: Only good comes from Love , Love is patient , Love is kind, Love is understanding , Love is forgiving , Love is caring, Love is worship, Love is adoring. Starting with this in my mind, I realised I hadn't crocheted anything to do with my faith or explored sharing this wonderful gift with any of my Christian friends.  I hope to find as many patterns as I can that relate to being a Christian, I will share them, make them and gift them.
